Identification of Leptocephalus acuticeps Regan as the Larva of the Eel Genus Auocettina:

چکیده
REGAN (1916: 140, pI. 7, fig. 5) based the description of a distinctive new eel larva, Leptocephalus acuticeps, on a single 47-mm specimen from the South Atlantic. He did not attempt to allocate this larva within the eel classification, but D'Ancona (1928 :109) and Bertin (1936 :7) assigned it to the Congridae. Although no additional specimens of 1. acuticeps appear to have been reported since the brief original description, Bertin re-examined the original larva and gave important supplementary information on it, and an additional illustration. Recent accessions of eel larvae from the eastern tropical Pacific.in the Scripps Institution of Oceanography fish collection include two specimens that closely match the major known characters of Lepto cephalus acuticeps. The present paper describes these larvae and assigns them to 1. acuticeps. Comparative study indicates that 1. acuticeps belongs to the A vocettina section of the family Nemichthyidae, and suggests that it is best interpreted as the general kind of larva that characterizes all of the avocettinas as a group. Musculoskeletal anatomy and feeding performance of pre-feeding engyodontic larvae of the European eel (Anguilla anguilla).
Being part of the elopomorph group of fishes, Anguillidae species show a leptocephalus larval stage. However, due to largely unknown spawning locations and habitats of their earliest life stages, as well as their transparency, these Anguilla larvae are rarely encountered in nature. Therefore, information regarding the early life history of these larvae, including their exogenous feeding strateg...
متن کاملGrowth Promoting Effect of Hyaluronan Synthesis Promoting Substances on Japanese Eel Leptocephali
Hyaluronans (HAs) are glycosaminoglycans produced in the bodies of Anguilliform and Elopiform leptocephali, and play a role in metabolic energy. In mammals, HA synthesis-promoting substances (HASPS) up-regulate the expression of HA synthase (HAS) and increase the amount of HA in the body. In this study, Japanese eel leptocephali were fed a HASPS containing diet. We analyzed HAS1s and HAS2 expre...
متن کاملRNA/DNA ratios in American glass eels (Anguilla rostrata): evidence for latitudinal variation in physiological status and constraints to oceanic migration?
During their larval leptocephalus phase, newly hatched American eels undergo an extensive oceanic migration from the Sargasso Sea toward coastal and freshwater habitats. Their subsequent metamorphosis into glass eel is accompanied by drastic morphological and physiological changes preceding settlement over a wide geographic range. The main objective of this study was to compare RNA/DNA ratios a...
متن کاملPhenolic compounds as chemical markers of low taxonomic levels in the marine algal genus Laurencia in the Persian Gulf
The genus Laurencia(Rhodomelaceae), a complex group, has 285 species and infraspecific names. Identification and taxonomy of these taxa, mainly has been based on flexible morphological characters which have led to a complicated taxonomy in this group. Nowadays, taxonomical study of this group has changed a lot by using reproductive characters, anatomical differences and modern...

The freshwater spiny eel, Macrognathus pancalus is an inland water teleost fish commonly known as barred or striped spiny eel found in Asia. The sampling areas were selected which are spatially and geographically different and characterized by different environmental conditions in order to elucidation of ecotype. A total 345 specimens were collected from the sampling sites during January 2008...
